Playing D&D gives children a way to learn to think outside themselves. They are playing their character, but the character is separate from them. They have to think about how the character would react to things. It helps build the ability to empathize. D&D is a team game. A group of people are working together to create a story, so children have to learn teamwork skills. Sojourners Awake! does a great job of letting children make their own decisions and show their personality while also leading them in a direction to work together. He includes them in the world and story building so everyone feels ownership of the story in some way. My children had a really positive experience learning to play D&D with him and are looking forward to the next class. They play at home now, creating their own worlds and maps and stories, and try to recruit all of their family and friends to play too.
